 Hot Wines Around $10 Bucks

I came across this wine on my trip to Chablis last summer. Simonnet-Febvre is owned by Louis Lator and Makes Awesome Chablis. What makes Saint-Bris something of an oddity for Burgundy is that it is made from Sauvignon grapes,  I was very impressed. For under $10 this wine screams value. His nose, very exuberant, is characterized by a smell of blackcurrant leaf crumpled dominant aromas of exotic fruits, freshly cut grass and citrus. . This wine has good structure with a persistent fruity and aroma. RZ

This was my first time having this wine and wont be the last. If you are looking for a nice St. Emillion that is drinking now, this is it. Blackberry, licorice on the nose .The palate is classic from a great estate in Saint-Emilion showing full body, fine tannins, explosive black cherry fruit, all encased in the subtle flavors of new oak. A blend of 70%Merlot & 30% Cabernet. This is a huge Value from the famous 2005 Vintage. This is your chance to taste a Saint Emilion Grand Cru at an amazing price from a classic vintage. Find it if you can $20-$25 RZ

Close to St Emilion on the right bank, Cotes de Castillon produces some really great merlot-based Petit Bordeauxs. Chateau Peyfol 2003 is no exception. Keep in mind 2003 was a great vintage. For those afraid of the “Bordeaux mystique”, here’s a wine to get your feet wet with. Robert Parker calls this wine a “sleeper of the vintage, with dense ruby color in addition to aromas of chocolate, black cherries, spice box and herbs.”  Parker I call it good jucie at a good price $20-$23 RZ

An un-oaked, elegant Chardonnay from this Maconnais village. A floral wine with flavours of apple and peach and for around $13 a great deal.RZ

Chateau Les Grands Marechaux has always been an amazing "Value". The 2005 Vintage has been one of the best vintages of all times and some of the highest prices ever seen for Bordeaux wines . For under $20 this wine is a gem.  A ton of great press from the Wine Spectator & R.P.I tasted the 2005  Marechaux on 9/16/2009 and it was drinking wonderful. Blaye is known as a happy hunting ground for bargains and this estate is the over-achiever – you’ll find terrific complexity of mocha, strawberry and cherry … and powerful, 14% alcohol effortlessly kept in balance.RZ

Pouilly-Fuissé is a white wine made from Chardonnay in a group of towns just to the north of the Beaujolais region in the far south of Burgundy. This wine is one of the least expensive i have seen in somtime. For under$20 you can be drinking a nice bottle of chard from Pouilly-Fuisse. Soft, rich, round, pears, apples, texture, length, acid,  and nice balance.RZ

Grown on the south-facing slopes of Mont Ventoux, the 2003 Murmurium Carpe Diem is an exciting Syrah/Grenache blend from Côtes-Du-Ventoux, a wine growing appellation in southeastern Rhône. Carpe Diem’s nose heavily displays this region’s characteristically spicy properties, along with rich blackberry, black-cherry and rhubarb. Light accents of vanilla, wet cardboard, lead pencil, and cool mineral notes contribute to the nice complexity of this vibrant, young wine. The spice box and black pepper strongholds on the nose slacken nicely in the mouth. A spirited dryness, combined with a smooth juicy textural mouth-feel, allow Carpe Diem to play a much more elegant hand than the price tag would have you expect. $14-$18 RZ

Twenty dollar Meursault is a memory these days, however Latour came up with another pair of really striking value whites.  You don’t see white Marsannays very often, or much of anything white in this part of the Cote de Nuits.  But here this is, a lovely round, stony edged Chardonnay with a plump middle of apple and pear that cuts away nicely to a crisp finish.  Perhaps not as layered as a Montrachet, or as intense as a Meursault, but a perfectly precise and delicious Chardonnay at a great price, and that’s the point.  Great value! $16-$18 RZ

CHÂTEAU DES LAURETS PUISSEGUIN SAINT-EMILION 2005 From a small region next to Saint-Emilion and from an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux, this has very good, complex fruit character, with solid plum and dark berry flavours. Great balance and fine tannins, and an excellent match for rich red meat and game. Cost between $18-$24 RZ
